Extra time! Arsene Wenger dismisses talk of retirement, saying it is "for young people"
The Arsenal boss says he is looking forward to the rebuilding of his current squad following the departures of Alex Song and Robin van Persie
Arsene Wenger has pledged to carry on at Arsenal and -dismissed any suggestion of -retirement.
Despite the frustrations of the last 12 months, losing the likes of Samir Nasri, Gael Clichy, Cesc Fabregas, Alex Song and star striker Robin van Persie, the -Gunners boss remains defiant.
“There are still miles in my legs,” he said ahead of this -afternoon’s clash with Liverpool at Anfield. In life it is like you are going on a mission and it does not cross my mind to finish.”
And there were overtones of the philosophy of his old adversary Sir Alex Ferguson as he spoke. Sir Alex now 71 once said: -“Retirement is for young -people.”
In a similar fashion, Wenger, 62, said: “You work as long as you can.”
His current project is to entice the best from the squad he has assembled to end the seven-year drought of trophies.
“Yes, I have to rebuild but to rebuild is exciting,” said Wenger, who admitted he felt a twinge of regret when he saw Van Persie score his first goal for United since his ￡24million move when he struck against Fulham last Saturday.
“I would have preferred to have kept Van Persie,” Wenger said. “There are not 100 players in the world who can score 30 goals in the Premier League.
“It was a fantastic goal. The quality of the finish was tremendous. It was a strange feeling for me... he had the wrong shirt on!”
But Wenger is in doubt about the pedigree of his -current squad. “You look when the internationals start and my players will be in their country’s squads,” he said.
