Thousands ofchildren are serving as child soldiers across India. That is the devastatingconclusion of a new report by the Asian Center for Human Rights.
According tothe study, the recruitment of child soldiers in the country is"rampant," as at least 3,000 children have been involved in variousconflicts. The center estimates that 500 children have been recruited in thenorthern state of Jammu and Kashmir, and 2,500 in eastern provinces that arehome to leftist insurgents.
India'sgovernment has been fighting a separatist insurgency in the northern region ofKashmir for decades. In several of the country's eastern provinces, Maoistinsurgents known as Naxalites are battling the government with the hopes of instatingtheir own communist nation. The Maoist movement has its own children's wing,Bal Sangathan, which is accused of forcibly recruiting one member from each Adivasi family.
The reportexplains:
“It has beenreported that children of different age groups are trained and assigneddifferent roles. The new entrants, aged from six to 12, are initially used asspies and couriers. They are also trained in basic drills and armed with .303rifles. Children above 12 are used as fighters. They are trained to make andplant landmines and bombs, gather intelligence and for sentry duty. Young girlsparticipate in the same drills as the boys. They are trained to lead operationsfrom the front.”
The center'sinvestigators say both insurgents as well as the government are using childrenin the conflicts, although the majority of child soldiers are recruited bymilitants.
As the WallStreet Journal notes, authorities in the state of Chhattisgarh have admitted tousing children as “Balarakshaks,” or child policeofficers.
The UnitedNations warned in a 2010 report that the conflict with the Naxalites placed aheavy burden on children in the region. The U.N. had received reports thatinsurgents were exhorting villagers to provide five boys or girls, while otherreports said militants were forcing families to send at least one child to jointhe insurgency's ranks.
The U.N. andHuman Rights Watch also accused Naxalite rebels of launching systematic attackson schools and claimed that government forces were using school buildings asbases for anti-Maoist operations.
HRW has alsodocumented that at least 34 schools in Jharkhand and 16 schools in Bihar wereattacked by the Maoists during 2009. These do not include schools that wereoccupied by security forces at the time of attack. Most of the attacks occurredat night when students and teachers were not there.
BedeSheppard, Asia researcher on children's rights at Human Rights Watch, said inresponse to the U.N. document that all sides of the conflicts are abusingchildren.
"Boththe security forces and the Maoists in India are exploiting and harmingchildren, destroying their chances at an education and causing damage that willaffect their entire lives," Sheppard said.

Shame on Huffington. SHAME. This is a misleadingand totally irresponsible headline. India does NOT sanction 3000 child soldiers.....It's a terrorist group ... the Naxalites ... which have caused problems inIndia for over forty years ... They are the ones employing child soldiers.
It is as foolish to headline these children assanctioned fact as it would be to imply that America supports knife welding,gun toting teenage gangs. They are here, but they are hardly supported by ourgovernment.

The children are most likely from poor familes,who sell their children one by one to get money to feed the ones living athome. Usually it's the girls they sell first into the sex trade.

India isn't "employing" child soldiers.In fact insurgents in India are drafting child soldiers to fight against India.
