Singapore saidWednesday it has rejected plans by South Korean activists to erect a statue inthe city-state commemorating women forced into sexual slavery by Japanduring World War II.

The cultureministry denied claims by the Korean Council for the Women Drafted for MilitarySexual Slavery that there had been talks about plans to put up such a statue.
“This is notaccurate,” the ministry told AFP in an emailed statement.
“There are noongoing meetings or discussions between the Singapore government and the KoreanCouncil for the Women Drafted for Military Sexual Slavery on this issue. Norwill we allow such a statue to be erected in Singapore.”

In Seoul last week,the activists unveiled plans to put up the statues—representing “comfort women”forced into Japanese military brothels during the war—in a number of Asiancountries starting with Singapore.
They also said theyhad held talks with Singaporeauthorities and added that a delegation would be sent to the city-state tofinalise the plans.

Ooops .... somebody'splans to spread hatred among the neighbors doesn't seem to be going so well.Congratulations to the government of Singapore for seeing these peoplefor the fanatics they are.
You know, while I agree with your statement here I wantto play devils advocate a moment and say this;
Other countries have put up memorials for the victims ofWWII in their countries and other places as well, I see no problem withacknowledging the victims however I think the timing and motivation aremisplaced.
A better memorialwould be in my opinion, one to all victims from all countries, and like it ornot there were plenty of Japanese victims as well.

But there is aproblem with Japan.Recently, two delegations of J-goverment officials visited Palisades Park, N.J.with a request the local goverment remove small monument removed from a publicpark. The brass monument was dedicated in 2010 to the memory of so-calledcomfort women, and many Korean who were forced into sexual slavery by Japanesesoldiers during World War II. The J-goverment reps was agressively lobbying toremove the monument. The monument in PalisadesPark is the only one in the U.S. dedicatedto comfort women. The J-goverment officials have asked the Korean authoritiesto remove that statue. The consul general of Japan ridiculously said theJ-government was willing to plant cherry trees in place of statue. Townofficials rejected the request, and the J-goverment delegation left. The secondJ-goverment delegation arrived short time later and was led by four members ofthe Japanese Parliament. Their approach was less diplomatic. They said thecomfort women were a lie, that they were set up by an outside agency, that theywere women who were paid to come and take care of the troops. The mayor of thetown refused to take it down. And this is happening today from Japan?

What a load ofrubbish! Yeah, they were paid by letting them live. I hate the way the Japanesetry to twist history and lie their way out of admissions of guilt. I wonder ifthis is how it will be written in the upcoming history textbook review.

I think the country where that women were forced intothis service should make a decision to allow the statue or not. It does seemlike there is continued renewed efforts to come up with different ways toattack Japan'sintegrity or lack there of. It is starting to look like its just acts of vindictivepeople while losing the true meaning of remembering these people.
What's done is done...how many times does it have to be apologized for and in how many differentways. Put it in the books and teach people to behave better than history hasshown us not to be.

I wholeheartedly agree that Korean victims and theirsupporters can erect all the plaques and statues that they feel they need ....in Korea.While I don't agree with their efforts, they should also be free to lobby otherAsian countries similarly affected to do the same.
What I strongly disagree with is immigrants draggingalong their historical baggage to countries such as USA,Canada,Australia etc. There is no reason for a monument commemorating Korean sufferingto be placed in a park - a public park no less - in New Jersey. The aforementioned countries arenations that welcome immigrants from all over the world meaning there are manyethnic groups, tribes, nationalities that have historical conflicts living sideby side. Putting up monuments recognizing every groups grievances is a fool'sgame and runs counter to the very spirit of immigration.
The local government in NJ that allowed this plaque to beplaced in a public park made a mistake. It should be removed since it hasnothing to do with the USAand undoubtedly offends many people. I have not a drop of Japanese blood in myveins yet I would complain about this to my local government if I were aresident of NJ ... in the same way I would complain if the Hutu or Tutsi orCroat or Serb or whomever wanted to erect a monument to their suffering in apublic park.
Keep that stuff inyour own countries please. And if you have no intention of working and playingnicely with others please don't bother immigrating in the first place.

请把这些东西(纪念碑)留在国内。如果你不打算在一个地方很好地和别人一起生活工作娱乐，请你不要移民到那个国家去。

People who can't moveon with the past can never reach the future. Ahh i hope Japan wont get affected by thisissue. Dragging people to their own levels. Even Philippineswho has undergone more slavery years than any other nation in asiawas able to forgive, how come these koreans' can't?

Singapore Chinesewere brutally treated by the invading Japanese. If they are going to allowanything they would be putting up Chinese statues first. They have their ownway of going about things. No wonder they do not welcome Korean groups doingthis there.

Honestly? Not a big fanof that either. BUT, I assume the museum you are talking about was paid for bysomeone who wanted to use their money in that way, and that it is not locatedin a public park.
