DUBAI, United Arab Emirates -- Shedding weight is as good as gold under an unusual slim-down initiative in Dubai over growing concerns about rising obesity levels in the wealthy Gulf city-state.
Municipal officials are offering a gram of gold worth about $45 at current prices for each kilogram of weight lost in a 30-day challenge. The minimum drop is two kilograms, or 4.4 pounds, to cash in.
Local media Wednesday quotes Dubai official Hussain Lootah as saying there is no limit on the payout for the golden losers, who must sign up and weigh in Friday.
The plan is the latest attempt to encourage healthier lifestyles in the United Arab Emirates. Across the Gulf Arab states, authorities have raised alarms about rising obesity from increasing fast-food diets and lack of exercise.

From some one who has lived in a gulf state it's a poor mix of climate and easy access to food that causes this problem. It's hard to exercise consistently when it's 120 degrees in the shade and there is a K F C or McDonald's on every corner.
Hopefully this initiative has results for them don't know if it would work in America though.

so true!! when we first went to the ksa, there was one national "fast food" burger place and it was rare to see an obese Saudi. by the time we left, pizza hut, mcdonalds, burger king, etc. were unavoidable. health issues like diabetes 2, hypertension, heart disease, came along with obvious obesity. it was sad to see a generally healthy population eat themselves into poor nutrition and bad health.

Stop blaming American fast food. The local people in Dubai hardly eat it. They eat their food, kebabs, felafel, etc etc. All that lamb is fatty. The difference isn't fast food chains, its an abundance of food and an economy that has shifted away from fishing and diving for pearls.
