China's Shenzhou 10 rocket blasts off from the Gobi Desert in the city of Jiuquan, in China's Gansu province, on Tuesday, June 11. The craft is scheduled to dock with the Tiangong-1 space module, where the three crew members will transfer supplies to the space lab, which has been in orbit since September 2011.
Hong Kong (CNN) -- A Chinese spaceship blasted off Tuesday from a launch center in the Gobi Desert, carrying three astronauts on what is expected to be the Asian giant's longest crewed mission yet.
Propelled by a Long March-2F rocket, the Shenzhou 10 craft is scheduled to dock with the Tiangong-1 space module where the crew will transfer supplies to the space lab, which has been in orbit since September 2011.
China has stepped up the pace of its space program since first sending astronaut Yang Liwei into orbit in 2003. In 2012, it conducted 18 space launches, according to the Pentagon.
Tuesday's launch from the the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center marks the start of China's fifth crewed space mission.
Footage broadcast by state broadcaster CCTV showed the craft lift off from the Gobi's flat expanse and arrow into the empty blue sky. Officials at the launch center looked on as it gained altitude, gradually shedding stages of the rocket.
During its 15 days in orbit, the crew will master the rendezvous and docking capabilities that are essential for the operation of a manned space platform.
"The functionality, performance, and coordination of all systems will be evaluated during this mission," Wu Ping, a spokesperson for China's Manned Space Program, told a news conference on Monday ahead of the launch.
She added that another main objective of the mission was to test technologies related to the construction of a space station as China seeks to establish a long-term human presence in space.
The most recent crewed mission last year carried its first female astronaut and was the first to make a manual docking with the space module. The crew for this mission will also include a woman, Wang Yaping, and two male astronauts, Nie Haisheng and Zhang Xiaoguang.
"These longer duration missions and space dockings are essential practice for any kind of long-term, more permanent presence in space or a mission to, say, the moon," said Dean Cheng, a research fellow at the Washington-based Heritage Foundation.
China's march into space underscores the country's growing financial and military clout and has unsettled some Western observers.
A 92-page report on Chinese military development released by the Pentagon last month highlighted the advances in China's space capabilities.
"China is developing a multi-dimensional program to improve its capabilities to limit or prevent the use of space-based assets by adversaries during times of crisis or conflict," the report said.
A spokeswoman for China's manned space missions said last year the program would cost a total of almost 40 billion yuan (US$6.27 billion).
The U.S. closed its space shuttle program in 2011 and is no longer aggressively pursuing manned space exploration, leaving Russia and China as the only two countries in the world capable of independently sending humans into space.
"In some ways, they have overtaken the US, at least temporarily," says the Heritage Foundation's Cheng. "Of course, the US, and even more Russia, have more experience in manned space. China is not, at this time, capable of reaching the Moon."
Companies like Boeing, Space X and Virgin Galactic are scrambling to develop private sector spacecraft and operate in what has previously been the exclusive preserve of sovereign nations.
China is not part of the project that maintains the International Space Station (ISS), which currently orbits the Earth conducting experiments in a range of fields, from physics to astronomy.
The ISS is a joint venture between NASA, Russia's RKA space agency, Japan's Aerospace Exploration Agency, the European Space Agency and the Canadian CSA.
China views its multi-billion dollar space program as a way to raise prestige both domestically and abroad. This is the first high-profile space launch since new leader Xi Jinping assumed the presidency in March.
Public reaction to the planned mission was mixed, with some users of the Twitter-like Weibo platform wishing the astronauts well, while others said the resources were best used on the ground.
"Our country may be lagging behind in other areas, but China has great achievement in aerospace technology," said one user with the handle @Jiniaobieliulin.
Journalist Katie Hunt wrote and reported from Hong Kong, and CNN's Zhang Dayu reported from Beijing. CNN's Jethro Mullen in Hong Kong contributed to this report.

It's simple, we have become an anti-Science, anti-Education people while China and rest of Asia hold high regard for educated people.

Thanks to Obama and his uneducated hords...

Thanks to the folks who tend to support the Tea Party. They are the ones who claim the earth is 10,000 years old and deny science. Its not the average American but the very far right and the very religious that is causing the issues.
Kurt Tappe
We've become an anti-tax people also. All we'd have to do is pay an extra dollar per year and we could fund NASA. But no, people would rather have 1/4 of a latte than pride in their country.
Jerky_san
The way I see that is it wouldn't go to NASA it would go to some black book project or some huge gov contract instead. If I could chose where my tax money went then I'd gladly give extra. Better roads, schools, lots into R&D, and things that would better all our lives..
MrRight1
Congrats. You are only 40+ years behind us.

Yep. You can thank the bible thumping, science denying, math defying NEW Republican Party for the U.S. moving backwards in that regard!

Don't be so pathetic, friend. This isn't a political conversation, but even if it were there is no one-party solution. That line of thinking is only part of the problem.
Chris J
Sanity, I'm no conservative, but I do know Obama slashed NASA's funding quite early in his presidency. I couldn't believe he'd done that, as NASA only made up 0.6% of the federal budget at the time. The funding for the Global War on Terror was funded 8x what NASA was.
Oh well.
alphacat4
What choice did he have considering our lousy state of economic affairs? I don't like it either but we have to cut according to the conservatives and they control congress who controls the money.
Nathan Moeller
Not true. NASA is working on heavy lift capability that will take us deeper into space than ever before. It just takes time/consistency to develop the vehicles. We'll get there :)
Arie Beuker, de
Thats what they have been saying since the 70's.
NASA is not going anywhere, they have to prove it.
Nathan Moeller
The failure is on the bureaucratic end of things. NASA can/does achieve great things, but it's still a government agency, which makes it subject to politics. Apollo was cut short when the government decided it didn't want to fund the program anymore. Shuttle was cut short when the government decided it wasn't safe (despite post-Columbia missions proving otherwise). Constellation was cancelled when Obama decided the Moon was ho-hum. SLS/Orion could potentially suffer the same fate if people keep complaining.
PsychWardResident
Wrong. It takes a can do mindset. Here in America our space program has stagnated due to government red tape, labor unions, lack of initiative, and a loss of the "lets get it done" attitude that came with Kennedy. NASA is no longer in the Space Launch Program. They are now just another layer in the government red tape, looking for private business to take over and do what they used to do. They have over regulated and over complicated everything.
I am speaking as a person that was once a employee in the Space Launch business (not laid off recently) and live in an area destroyed by the downturn of NASA. And "engineer" could not turn a screw on a launch vehicle without 3 people certifying it needed to be done, a panel to determine how many times to turn it and QA signing off it was done properly after a week of testing was completed. And I did not mention the piles of paperwork.
Nathan Moeller
Since shuttle, they've launched probes to the radiation belts, the Moon and Jupiter, a rover to Mars, climate satellites and a host of other spacecraft. They're still in the launch business.
Yes, the politicians are crippling the efforts to restore manned launch capability, but our program is still strong. I do thank you for your service to this great nation and program, though! My heart hurts for those affected by the bad dealings in Washington.
Jhonny Ausemkock
LOL, an amateur rocketeer could build and launch a "probe" if the government allowed it. In fact, if it weren't for said regulations, they would be doing it every day just for fun. Hardly a supporting testament for the viability and relevance of the current NASA.
Nathan Moeller
Read about the missions I mentioned and you'll see why it's far less simple than you make it out to be.
Kurt Tappe
We shouldn't have a lack of a space program right now. The programs shouldn't be mutually exclusive.
Jhonny Ausemkock
Heavy lift is almost mute if we can't launch people. We already have lift vehicles. It takes people to assemble, repair, and maintain these craft in orbit. Our priorities are REALLY screwed up. We are literally buying the cart before the horse! Like Jeremy said... backwards. We are currently in a position where we have to rely on our "friends" the Russians to get a man to or from orbit. That's just beyond embarrassing. It's sad. What's worse is that we had a perfectly viable manned craft in the works ready for testing and someone who shall remain nameless pulled the plug on it, leaving us at the mercy of (let's be honest here) an enemy to meet our space needs for us. We're not "getting there" any time soon, believe me. We're won't be getting anywhere in any sector any time soon at the current rate.
Nathan Moeller
The gap sucks, sure, but it's not new. We had the same thing between ASTP and STS. At least we have international partners to ride with in the meantime. We didn't have that luxury from 1975-1981.
scott
First good luck reading this.
There is beyond proof that they do. Right a book about democracy or there gov, then that person goes missing never to be seen again, or is found dead. times that by 100ds if not 1,000s of people. THE CHINES GOV ARE MURDERING CRIMINALS, THAT ARE JUST LIKE ALL THE PEOPLE WE LOCK UP AND ARE IN JAIL. WE ALL 100% KNOW THIS IS CORRECT.
What dream could that gov have?
Well seen as they want 2 cling to power and the commonest GOV lets people get murdered from there orders "clearly", i think we know there dream of taking over no 1 and whats going to happen when u just look at in and what kind of people they are.
You don't let murders get put in a position to build up or get

Not really, they are just regrouping and getting read for the next adventure. Just tougher to do with the large budget cuts.

Google "Space Launch System" if you think we aren't going anywhere.
I don't know why people like you think the way you do just because the shuttles are retired.

At least the Chinese can get their rockets off the ground, unlike their pesky neighbor to the south.
andres
And which pssky neighbor to the 'south' do you mean? If you are talking about NORTH KOREA not only does it get its rockets off of the ground it put one into space, it is NOT south of the country of China. Mostly it is North East of China.
Temi Oshokoya
That gap is pretty narrow considering how much we owe/ depend the supposed nation behind us and all.

No congratulate Russian technology which was given to China for cheap and the soviet aircraft carriers and submarines sold to china for a whopping $20,000!

Nice job China, one day you'll catch up to us because... oh wait. We don't have a space program anymore. I guess maybe one day we'll catch up to you, since you're doing things we did over 40 years ago, but apparently can no longer do! It's pathetic how the US government has destroyed our manned space program.
Lance Johnson
A bunch of flat earth science deniers/tbaggers in DC say gay marriage is our most important issue now. These same uneducated paint eaters also say Americans are lazy and always looking for handouts.

China will soon outcompete US militarily, in space, and in science and technology. Already the Industrial GDP of China is much larger than the US and has been for at least 5 years as is the agricultural GDP. China has the best infrastructure with more world class subway than all of the Western world and 80% of the world's high speed train lines (the US has 0%). China will soon rid the world of Western tyranny.

The US can no longer consume 40% of the world's resources with 4% of the world's population. There is a new Sheriff in town folks and one that will put an end to American tyranny and war crimes. In Pakistan and Iran, China will do to US what the US did to Soviet Union in Afghanistan. Tens of thousands of American troops will be murdered by Chinese made weapons sold to the countries the US attacks.

Ixion
To listen to some people, it is like the US developed space tech and then just because we do not use what we have, we automatically lose that technology or capability. Fact is, that we can still go to the moon and we can still put a shuttle in orbit. We still have that capability and the technology to exploit it, we simply choose for what ever reason not to use it.
You also have a natural shift from government space programs to private space programs. These private space programs are not likely to simply up and leave the US and even if they did, the innovations they develop are likely to be available to those who can pay for it.
China going to space is not a really big issue. Yes, we have to watch their intentions and make sure they can not militarize space but in the end, simply because they can do things that we have done for more then 50 years dose not make them a big threat or otherwise a problem for us. In the coming years, more countries will enter space and maybe it is passed time that we welcome that.
