While the birds are able to eat smaller fish they catch, larger ones become stuck in their gullet.

I am lucky enough to say I have been to Guilin, and it is even more spectacular in person. The views are fantastic, the people are fantastic and it really is WOW cannot recommend going there enough!
Having been to Guilin and gone on a boat trip up the Lee River and I can say this place is truly beautiful and the photos are not enhanced at all. The cormorants can swallow small fish but have to spit out the larger ones. There's a lot of world out there so go out and see it.

I had the pleasure of sailing down the Li River (Guilin) about 20 years ago, when the fisherman were a common sight, and the scenery breathtaking, plus the water buffalo paddling. A magical journey.
