The aim of the present study was to investigate the suitability of a Biological Aerated Filter (BAF) plant as either an alternative process or an upgrading step for the treatment of domestic wastewater from the city of Rome.
The total length of the experimental activ-ity was three years; some of the results of the first two years canbe found in previous papers of the same authors.
During thelast year of the activity, it was investigated if plant efficiency could be improved by adopting a chemical pretreatment of the influent wastewater in order to reduce its solid content.
The present paper shows only the results obtained in this part which was scheduled through two operating phases: during phase 1 the plant was fed with real wastewater collected after screening, degritting and pri-mary sedimentation, whereas during phase 2 the BAF plant received the chemically pretreated wastewater, containing a lower suspended solids load. The nitrification and COD removal efficiencies were evaluated under both conditions.
Besides, modeling activity using the experimental results was carried out with the aim of evaluating the optimal design and operating conditions for a full-scale BAF plant.
