For first time, majorityof Americans favor legalizing marijuana
WASHINGTON (Reuters) - For the first time, amajority of Americans back legalizing marijuana, marking significant changes inpublic opinion toward the drug, especially among the young, a survey by the Pew Research Center showed on Thursday.

The survey showed52 percent of Americans support legalizing marijuana, which the federal government deems an illegal drug even as many states haveloosened restrictions on "pot" use.
Support for legalizing pothas risen by 11 points since 2010 and was up from just 12 percent backing in1969, when 84 percent of those polled opposed legalization. In the most recent survey, 45percent of Americans opposed legalization.
"For the first time in more than fourdecades of polling on the issue, a majority of Americans favor legalizing theuse of marijuana," Pew said in a statement.

Colorado and Washington became the first U.S. states tolegalize the possession and sale of marijuana for recreational use followingtwin referendums last November. Nineteen states and the District of Columbia allow the medicaluse of marijuana.
The Pew poll found that 65 percent of people bornsince 1980 favor legalizing marijuana use, up from 36 percent in 2008.

Some 72 percent of those polled said governmentefforts to enforce marijuana laws cost more than they are worth. Sixty percent said the federal governmentshould not enforce federal laws barring use of marijuana in states where it islegal.
There are partisan differences over legalization,with 59 percent of Democrats supporting making marijuana legal, compared with37 percent of Republicans.

I'm 66years old. I had bursitis in both shoulders so bad that I couldn't raise myarms to brush my teeth nor sleep soundly. The pain was almost intolerable. Thenabout a year ago I read up on medicinal #$%$ and now I smoke EVERY night beforeretiring. I have NO pain anymore and I sleep soundly. So, am I a drug addict? Ithink not.

Legalizationmakes too much sense not to be done. Imagine how much extra tax revenue couldbe generated by legalizing and taxing pot. Imagine how much money would besaved by not having to incarcerate petty drug offenders. Imagine the decreasein violent drug crime that would take place.
